Garden Pottery Studio, Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Pete and Rachel approached us with a clear vision of a multi-purpose garden room, primarily to be used as a dedicated pottery studio, with a partitioned storage area to keep materials and equipment neatly organised.
To prepare the site, we carried out the removal of three trees and associated stumps, creating a clear and level area for construction. Once the site was fully cleared and prepared, we installed a ground screw base, providing a secure, stable, and environmentally considerate foundation for the structure.
With the base in place, construction of the 6m x 3.5m garden room began. The structure was carefully assembled to bring Pete and Rachel’s vision to life, ensuring the internal layout supported both creative work and practical storage.
To ensure the building blended seamlessly with the garden surroundings, the exterior was finished with Olive Green cladding, complemented by 3m aluminium bifold doors that flood the space with natural light and create a strong visual connection to the garden.
To address changes in garden levels and achieve a clean, professional finish, we designed and built a bespoke sandstone step across the front elevation. We also installed tilt-able LED spotlights, discreetly fitted into the roof overhang, providing a modern, focused lighting effect at the entrance.
As part of the project, we supplied and installed a full extraction unit suitable for use with Rachel’s pottery kiln, ensuring safe ventilation during operation.
Due to the building exceeding 15m² and being located within 1 metre of the boundary, the rear elevation was fully fireproofed using James Hardie Plank cement-based cladding, ensuring compliance with building regulations while maintaining a high-quality finish.
Pete and Rachel were delighted with the final result. The completed garden room provides Rachel with a dedicated, professional space to create and showcase her pottery, without the disruption and mess inside the home. The project successfully balances functionality, safety, and design, delivering a space that will be enjoyed for years to come.
It all starts with the design plans
