Garden Chill-out Room, Bletchley

Sharon contacted us to see if we could help with providing a private chill-out room for her grandson who suffers from Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

He had got to the age where he needed somewhere to escape to when ‘life’ became too overwhelming. Sharon also looks after two elderly relatives and life can be quite hectic inside the house at times.

Sharon didn’t want the Room too far away from the house, as her grandson still needs to feel part of the family and take part in activities when he is able to. This is a private space for him to play his games, watch TV or just to chill out. We installed partial soundproofing to the Garden Room to help with noise and used Hardie Planks as instructed by the DFG to add extra fire protection, as the room was to be built close to the fence and other outbuildings. The Garden Room was equipped with a shower and toilet so that Sharon’s grandson didn’t have to go into the house if he didn’t want to. A lot of thought went into the sensory lights and mood lighting with smart bulbs.

Internal Venetian blinds were installed in the french doors, giving him complete control over how much light is allowed into the Garden Room depending on how he feels.

Throughout the project, we worked closely with representatives from the Disabled Facilities Grant of Milton Keynes City Council. There was a large tree which Sharon wanted to keep in place, so a lot of work was needed to make sure that both the tree and the Garden Room were made safe. The concrete base was reinforced with a steel frame.

Sharon is really happy with the result, and believes that this private chill-out room will help her grandson have a happier life.
